Jackson Hole Ski Resort Profile
Summary: Visitors to Jackson Hole essentially get a 3-for-1. First, there is the world-class skiing at Jackson Hole Resort. Second, the experience of the Grand Tetons which exhibit great views on clear days and are home to one of our great national parks. Third, the town of Jackson, WY, is one of the more entertaining, historic, and interesting towns in the west.

The only knock on Jackson Hole is that it is a resort geared for intermediate and above skiers. A full 90% of terrain is for advanced and intermediate skiers. This is great if you have a proficient skiing family, but may not be ideal for a family of beginners. Still, the 10% of beginner terrain amounts to 250 acres, an amount that is larger than some eastern ski resorts altogether. A family who has skied before or who has a mix of skills will find Jackson to offer a great experience. The intermediate and advanced skiers in the group won't be disappointed, as the mountain offers some of the more challenging skiing in North America.

The Apres Vous and Sublette quads both take skiers to challenging but manageable terrain of blues and blacks. For the brave souls, taking the Tram to Corbet's Cabin will provide for an exhilirating experience as they find their way down. Beginners and those getting their ski legs will want to stick to the Bridger Gondola, and the Casper Bowl and Sweetwater Chairs. The Gondola will be the best option for giving newer skiers plenty of range and elevation on relatively tame trails.

The town of Jackson is an experience in itself, offering everything from hole-in-the-wall burger joints to upscale art shops. Mountain High Pizza Pie is always a favorite because of the incredible pizzas they make up. For a casual meal and drink, try Sanke River Brewing. The Cowboy Bar is a great stop for the evening when Mom and Dad find a sitter.

Jackson is one of those places that feels like the west – similar to Steamboat Springs in Colorado. It creates a great vacation experience – skiing and then some. If you are a family looking for more than just slopes on your vacation, you should strongly consider Jackson Hole.

Terrain / Highest Elevation / Vertical Drop: 2,500 acres / 10,500 feet / 4,140 feet

Activities for Non-Skiers: The Jackson Hole Resort is actually at Teton Village, an area with lodging and several shops and restaurants. The real diversion is 10 minutes away, in the town of Jackson. With recent development, the shopping, eating, and nightlife venues in Jackson rival and sometimes surpass the glitzier Colorado places. Add in a day-trip into the nearby Tetons or Yellowstone (another 90 minutes north), and Jackson truly offers an experience for everyone in the family, no matter if they ski, shop, or sightsee.

Ski School: Jackson Hole offers a ski school with more graduated levels than is typical. Beginning at age 3 and going all the way up to 17, there is a class for every skill level. Students are graduated from one class to another upon showing certain skills, to ensure they are always learning with a true peer group. Prices are on the high end of what we see in the West, but the reputation of the school is strong.

Day Care: Children 6 months and older can be in the Wrangler Daycare. Some basic ski skill activity is provided in the Daycare, but it is not a formalized ski lesson.

Getting there: The Jackson Hole airport, 40 minutes away, has become a nice medium-sized airport. Direct jet service is offered from Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles. Shuttles can get you to the town of Jackson or to Teton Village.

Insider Tip: When the slopes are full or the snow is icy and packed, take a day trip around the Tetons to Grand Targhee (about a 1 hour drive). The snow is usually much lighter and more consistent on that side of the mountain.
